Fungal Nails  (Onychomycosis)

Nail fungus is very common and can affect people of any age, but is more common in adults. It is caused by fungal organisms most commonly Dermaphytes, mould and yeasts.

Risk factors

Old age, sweating heavily, history of athletes foot, walking barefoot in damp communal areas, mild skin or nail injury, having diabetes, circulation, skin problems and or weakened immune system.

Symptoms

Fungal nails may appear with one or more symptoms, these can include thickening of nails, whitish to yellow-brown discolouration, brittle, crumbly or ragged edges, and or dark discolouration caused by debris building up under nails.

Treatment

Fungal nail infections can be difficult to treat, sometimes it can take months to see results. If over the counter products haven’t helped relieve your symptoms you may wish to discuss your options with one of our podiatrists. We can recommend topical treatments, PACT light therapy and also educate you on preventative measures to reduce the risk of infection spreading to other nails as well as other family members.New Paragraph
