Plantar Warts
Plantar Wart - Cause - Treatment
What are Plantar Warts?
Warts, or verrucae, are common skin lesions that occur frequently in children and to a lesser extent in adults. They may appear dark brown in colour with red pinpoints in the centre. They are often covered by surrounding callus or hard skin and are frequently misdiagnosed as corns.
Cause
Warts are caused by a virus and are easily transferable. You may have contracted a wart from communal areas such as swimming pools or gyms. Any place that involves water, barefoot activity and shared spaces may pose a risk.
When do we treat them?
Warts often resolve on their own within six months in children but can persist longer in adults. If plantar warts are painful, spreading, increasing in size or interfering with daily activities, then treatment is recommended.
How do we treat them?
Treatment comes in many forms, but evidence suggests that topical wart paints and preparations are the best first line of treatment. Combined with an accurate diagnosis and care from one of our podiatrists, we can help get your feet back to being wart-free in no time.
