Fungal Nails

Fungal Nails  (Onychomycosis)

Nail fungus is very common and can affect people of any age, though it is more common in adults. It is caused by fungal organisms, most commonly dermatophytes, mould and yeasts.

Risk factors

Older age, sweating heavily, history of athlete’s foot, walking barefoot in damp communal areas, mild skin or nail injuries, diabetes, circulation problems, skin conditions or a weakened immune system.

Symptoms

Fungal nails may present with one or more of the following: thickened nails, whitish to yellow-brown discolouration, brittle, crumbly or ragged edges, dark discolouration caused by debris building up under the nail.

Treatment

Fungal nail infections can be difficult to treat and may take several months to show improvement. If over-the-counter products have not helped relieve your symptoms, speak to one of our podiatrists to discuss your options. We can recommend topical treatments, PACT light therapy and provide education on preventative measures to reduce the risk of infection spreading to other nails and to family members.
