Common Arthritic Conditions

Arthritis is a very common condition affecting 1 in 6 Australians, both adults and children. Arthritis is an umbrella term for over 100 conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system, specifically joints, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness.

Gout


Gout: is a common and complex form of Arthritis, caused by urate crystals accumulating in the joint resulting in inflammation and intense pain.


Signs & Symptoms:


  • intense joint pain (often in the big toe): can also affect the ankle, knee, elbow, wrist, and finger joints
  • lingering discomfort: ongoing discomfort can be experienced in the affected joint after the severe pain subsides
  • inflammation and redness: swollen, warm, and tender
  • limited range of motion: inability to move joints normally



Osteoarthritis


Osteoarthritis: the most common form of joint disease, Osteoarthritis occurs when cartilage and other tissue within the joint breaks down or changes in structure.


Osteoarthritis has previously been referred to as a ‘wear and tear’ condition however it is now thought that it results from a joint working extra hard to repair itself.


Signs & Symptoms:


  • pain when using the joint (pain can reduce when resting)
  • joint stiffness
  • reduced joint movement
  • swelling in and around the joint
  • joints feeling loose or unstable



Rheumatoid Arthritis


Rheumatoid Arthritis: is an inflammatory form of Arthritis causing pain and swelling of the joints. Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease where your immune system attacks your own healthy tissue, specifically targeting the lining of the joints, causing inflammation and joint damage.


Signs & Symptoms:


  • joint pain, swelling, and tenderness
  • joint stiffness
  • symmetry: affecting the same joints on both sides of the body
