Morton’s Neuroma

A Morton’s Neuroma, also known as an Intermetatarsal Neuroma, is a painful condition affecting the ball of the foot and the toes. It is caused when the nerve leading to the toes becomes compressed and irritated, thickening the nerve which, in turn, becomes more easily compressed. It most often affects the third and fourth toe region.

Causes:

  • narrow tight or poorly fitted footwear
  • high heels
  • high-impact sports
  • foot deformities
  • gait abnormality
  • flat feet
  • high arches
  • bunions/hammer toes

Signs & Symptoms:

  • burning pain in the ball of your foot
  • numb or tingling sensation in the toes
  • feeling like you are standing on a stone in your shoe

Treatment:

Treatment of a Morton’s Neuroma focuses on preventing compression of the impacted nerve. This may involve footwear review, orthotics (prescription or prefabricated), padding, or a combination of these.
