Overuse Injuries

Bursitis, Shin Splints, Sprains, Strains, and Stress fractures

What is an overuse injury?

Overuse injuries occur when too much stress is placed on a part of the body from repetitive actions. Strain and overuse injuries cause pain, swelling, and inflammation. They are most common in athletes involved in repetitive, high-impact sports such as running, netball, basketball, and football.

Common overuse injuries include:

  • bursitis: swelling of the bursae (small, fluid filled sacs that protect bony prominences)
  • shin splints: injury of the muscles, tendons, or their attachments to foot or leg bones
  • ankle sprains: acute injury caused by damage to the ligaments in the ankle
  • strains: when muscles are stretched or torn
  • stress fractures: a tiny crack or fracture in the bone from walking or running
  • tendinitis: inflammation of tendons.

Causes:

Overuse injuries may be caused by a single or combination of factors including:

  • overtraining
  • poor technique
  • increasing intensity too quickly
  • inadequate rest and recovery
  • wrong footwear for activity
  • foot shape or structure
  • tight muscles or lack of stretching.

The first step in the treatment of overuse injuries begins with the identification of the cause of the injury.

Once the cause is identified, your Podiatrist will be able to provide you with a comprehensive treatment plan that may involve one or more of the following:
